Calling all interpreters...

We've been talking about this, but the time has come! In order to better serve ProZ Pro Bono partners who require interpreting, we will be using a new platform currently being developed by the ProZ.com team. The platform is called Remoto, and I know many of you have already registered, but stay tuned to this post for some important information anyway...

So, if you are an interpreter and haven't already registered, start here: https://www.proz.com/remoto/

Be sure to fill out your Remoto profile as completely and accurately as you can. Just like the information you include in your ProZ.com profile, this information is what will help us connect you with the right PPB assignments, but it is also very important in how well you will be able to connect with commercial assignments when they come along! While we want to use Remoto to better serve our non-profit partners with interpreting needs, the idea is to also use it to help you leverage the pro bono work you have done to win commercial work as well. It is increasingly important for freelance linguists to be able to show they are real human beings, that they are who they say they are, and that their qualifications are real too.

Here is what is required in order to get your Remoto profile activated, so have these on hand when you register:

  • A photo/scan of your government-issued ID card

  • A photo of you the interpreter holding your ID card (anti-fraud selfie)

If you are a medical interpreter, you will be required to submit some of the standard documentation for work in that field:

  • HIPAA compliance certificate

  • Fraud, Waste and Abuse (FWA) certificate

  • Proof of completion of your 40-hour medical interpreter training

If you have certifications for either medical or legal/court interpreting, you can add these and verify them through the system.

The following things are not required to get started, but I would highly encourage you to add them if you have them-- every little bit can make a difference!

  • CV / proof of past experience

  • University degree(s)

  • Interpretation training, terminology training

  • Language certificates, native-language certificate

  • Letter of recommendation

Important in order to start taking PPB assignments using Remoto:

Once your Remoto profile has been approved, you will need to configure your profile to allow PPB calls. To do this, open up the editor of your profile at https://www.proz.com/remoto/user/interpreter-profile?edit=1 and mark that you are "Available for pro bono interpretation":

In the coming days and weeks I will be connecting everyone to our Remoto page and we will be doing some tests before we begin providing calls to partners. If you are already on the Discord, stay tuned to the channel there for interpreting, where I will be making those announcements.

And finally, check out the training section for PPB volunteers, where you may find courses related to interpreting and terminology which may be helpful, and are free to volunteers: https://www.proz.com/next/learn/courses/Free-resources-for-ProZ-Pro-Bono-volunteers

Happy interpreting!
